Paul Smith's College is set in the Adirondacks of Northern New York amid awe-inspiring mountains, sparkling lakes and lush forests. The main campus of the 14,200 acre property is on the shores of Lower St. Regis Lake, providing a safe, comfortable and invigorating environment to obtain baccalaureate or associate degrees. Bachelor’s programs include Biology, Business, Culinary Arts and Service Management, Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences, Forestry, Hotel, Resort and Tourism Management, Natural Resources, and Recreation, Adventure Travel and Ecotourism (RATE). Alternatively, careers also start with Associate degrees in programs such as Business, Culinary Arts, Forest Recreation or Forest Technician, Liberal Arts, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Outdoor Recreation, Surveying, or Urban Tree Management.

Whether a Culinary program, a degree in Ecology, or a career in Forestry is of interest, all students revel in the same setting that inspired some of the most fascinating characters in American history. People such as P.T. Barnum, Teddy Roosevelt, Grover Cleveland, Irving Berlin, and Henry Ford enjoyed the pristine outdoor environment and were among the frequent visitors to the College's antecedent, Paul Smith's Hotel. There isn't another college campus in the United States that offers as much opportunity for recreation just outside a dorm's doorstep. Hiking, canoeing, kayaking, skiing, snowshoeing, swimming, and mountain biking are readily available, and with Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain Ski Area just 25 miles away, the down hill skiing opportunities abound.
Students at Paul Smith's never have to worry about getting lost in the shuffle. Our small class sizes allow each student to realize his or her potential. The 14-to-1 student-to-faculty ratio means teachers, mentors, and advisors are always close at hand to listen and encourage individual growth. And, although our community is small, our scope extends far beyond the Adirondacks. Paul Smith's student population is increasingly culturally diverse with young people coming from around the world. Ireland, Bosnia, Italy, Tibet, Japan, and Kenya are countries recently represented within the student body.
Extensive hands-on training, field work, internships, externships and experiential learning is what sets Paul Smith's apart from other colleges. Regardless of the program, our students start gaining valuable, hands-on experience in each chosen career in the first semester. Forestry, surveying and the environmentally-based programs utilize the six-million acre Adirondack Park for their classroom, while the culinary students have new, state-of-the-art kitchens on campus, and work at world-class resorts for real-time training. Beyond the classroom, there are a variety of internships and externships offering exciting opportunities to enhance their experience and credentials all the more.
Considering today's competitive job market, Paul Smith's hands-on experience is a smart choice. Upon graduation, opportunities are virtually unlimited, and for the past ten years the transfer and job-placement rate has been a near-perfect 99 percent!
